YOUNG SAMIA (female, 8 years old)

A young Somali girl growing up in a tight-knit family in Mogadishu. A bit of a tomboy — not because she looks like one, more because she behaves like one. Loves swearing. Fun-loving, full-of-life and exuberant, she is extremely passionate about running. Actress must be a native speaker of Somali.

TEEN SAMIA (female, 16/17 years old)

Our heroine at the age when the real Samia Yusuf Omar competed in the 2008 Beijing Olympics (see photos below), up until she drowned trying to cross from Libya to Italy as a refugee. She has a strong and determined character. Extremely physically fit. Has a “hearty, honest laugh.” Actress must be a native speaker of Somali.

YOUNG ALI (male, 8 years old)

Samia’s best friend and confident – and like her, a smart kid with big dreams. Cheeky and a bit of a rascal, with a good sense of humor. He’s extremely competitive with Samia, and dislikes losing to a girl, but ultimately becomes her most enthusiastic supporter. Has a strong, fighting spirit – and will protect Samia without hesitation. Actor must be a native speaker of Somali.

TEEN ALI (male, 15 to 17 years old)

Ali in his teen years; later, a member of the jihadist fundamentalist group known as Al-Shabaab, which came to prominence during the Somalia War (2006 to 2009). Actor must be a native speaker of Somali.

Samia’s older sister. Actress must have a wide playing age, from mid-teens into young adulthood. Singing skills a plus. Actress must be a native speaker of Somali.

AYAAN (female, late 30s or early 40s)

Samia’s mother. A dignified and proud woman. She tries to support her daughters – all of her children – as much as she can but knows that this is a man’s world. Women have to be tough to make it. She is not an optimist but a true fighter, with the clear knowledge that you must be one if you are a mother in Somalia.

YUSUF (male, 40s)

Samia’ s father . Y usuf has a very strong personality: cheeky , funny and vibrant. A charming husband and devoted father, he believes in his daughter 1000% and is willing to go to great lengths to help her achieve her dreams. After he loses his leg in a terrorist attack, Yusuf struggles with depression and addiction. But he never gives up on his dream: To see his kids live theirs.

A representative from the Olympic Committee. Free-spirited, progressive and fun, Saado has a larger-than-life personality and can-do attitude. She facilitates Samia’s pathway to the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
